Sarcastic Fringehead (Neoclinus blanchardi)


Chordata > Pisces > Actinopterygii > Perciformes > Chaenopsidae


Demersal to 70m, often in holes or under rocks. Body slender and elongate, brown with red markings. Dorsal fin long, extending the length of the body, and with two distinct ocelli: the first between the spines 1 and 2, and the second between spines 5 and 9. More spines than soft rays in dorsal fin. Mouth very large, even among fringeheads, with maxillary extending far beyond the eye. Supraorbital cirri very simple, shorter than eye, and undivided. Length to 12 inches. Baja to San Francisco (3) Uncommon (3) Marine.
