Shiner Surfperch (Cymatogaster aggregata)


Chordata > Pisces > Actinopterygii > Perciformes > Embiotocidae


Demersal to 150m, usually in shallow and calm waters including bays and estuaries, and around eelgrass or piers. Greenish dorsally, silver ventrally, sides with 3 yellow vertical bars crossed by 8 horizontal stripes made up of small black spots; breeding males more heavily black-colored than females. Anal fin sometimes with a yellow blotch anteriorly, other fins mostly colorless. Length to 8 inches. Includes as a synonym C. gracilis. Baja to Alaska (3) Common; the fourth most common fish species recorded from Colorado Lagoon, the seventh most commonly recorded species at Newport Bay, and the ninth most commonly recorded species at Cabrillo Beach, with peak numbers between April and October (4,5,6) Marine.
