California Sheephead (Semicossyphus pulcher)

Chordata > Pisces > Actinopterygii > Perciformes > Labridae

Associated with rocky reefs and kelp beds to depths of about 30m. Sexually dimorphic; females uniformly red-brown, males with black head, thick broad reddish central band, and black posterior; chin white in both sexes. Length to 3 feet. All Sheephead are born female and transform into males at about 16 inches; certain environmental factors may effect the age of the transition. Baja to Monterey (3) Common (3) Marine.
