The state marine fish of California; associated with rocky reefs, kelp beds, and clear water to depths of 30m. An unmistakable species, body compressed and bright orange, young with bright blue spots. Length to 14 inches. Highly territorial. Baja to Monterey Bay (3) Common (3) Marine.
