Giant Sea Bass (Stereolepis gigas)

Chordata > Pisces > Actinopterygii > Perciformes > Polyprionidae

Demersal to about 40m on rocky bottoms in nearshore areas, and outside kelp beds. Body elongate, gray with black spots (juveniles reddish with black spots). Length to 7 feet. Differs from sea bass and groupers of the family Serranidae by having 2 spines on the operculum instead of 3. Mexico to Northern California (3) Common (3) Marine.
