Honey Bee (Apis melifera)

Arthropoda > Insecta > Hymenoptera > Aculeata > Apidae > Apinae > Apini

A nonnative but incredibly important species, responsible for the pollination of a number of economically significant crops as well as the commercial production of honey. In California the species is very widespread and familiar, though in the past decade honey bee numbers have suffered noticeable declines due to the appearance of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), the causes of which are still being researched.
