Carpet Beetle (Cryptorhopalum [8 spp.])

Arthropoda > Insecta > Coleoptera > Polyphaga > Bostrichoidea > Dermestidae

A small carpet beetle that can often be found on flowers. Eight species have been recorded from Southern California: C. apicale, C. balteatum, C. filitarse, C. fusculum, C. haplotes, C. rubidum, C. triste, and C. uteanum. A key to species is presented in Beal (2). I've personally encountered Cryptorhopalum on California Buckwheat in Orange County, which Beal lists as a floral record for both C. filitarse and C. haplotes.
