Smooth Chione (Chione fluctifraga)

Mollusca > Bivalvia > Veneridae

Ranges from Santa Barbara County southward. See also the Wavy Chione and Banded Chione, which occur concurrently. Can be distinguished from the other two species by the lack of a distinct lunule, a heart-shaped region on the anterior end (see here for example of a lunule in the Wavy Chione). This is also the largest of the three, attaining a length of up to three inches. Can be found in mudflats.
