Topsmelt (Atherinops affinis)

Chordata > Pisces > Actinopterygii > Atheriniformes > Atherinidae

Pelagic, neritic; found in bays, kelps beds, sloughs and estuaries, forming schools. Green dorsally, silvery ventrally, with a dark midline stripe. Length to about 14 inches. The Jacksmelt is similar, but differs in the positioning of the dorsal fins: the Topsmelt has about 5-8 scales between the two dorsal fins, while the Jacksmelt has the first dorsal fin more anterior with 10-12 scales between dorsal fins. Gulf of CA to BC (3) Common (3) The most abundant fish species in Upper Newport Bay, the second most abundant fish recorded from Colorado Lagoon, and the 12th most commonly recorded fish from Cabrillo Beach (5,6,7) Marine.
